Anonymous Story (XII)

"Just Look the Other Way"

This did not directly happen to me. But I was 15 at the time and it was my last day in the mental hospital. We were eating our lunch, and a girl gets brought into the children’s ward on a gurney. She was screaming, crying, and asking them to unrestrain her.

After lunch, was “quiet time,” where we were locked in the rooms for an hour or two. They immediately put her into my room without providing her lunch. They took my mattress and put it on the floor in the hallway right outside her room. They all waited there while we had “quiet time.”

She was screaming at me through the small window in the door, asking me to help her, saying they mistreat her here and at home. She was begging me for my help and I couldn’t help, all I could do is sit there with tears welling up in my eyes as the nurses went on to make fun at her. They joked about her, because apparently she’s there often.

They told me to “just look the other way.” I watched them laugh at her pain for an hour, until it was time for me to leave.
